Date: 171209 Place: Darul Arqam Auditorium

Dr Abdullah Hakim Quick delivered a lecture on hijrah recently and these are the points that I managed to jot down and share with you. Here’s his biography if you want to know more about the speaker.

1. Taqwa refers to being fearful of His punishment and hopeful of His mercy. With taqwa, it’ll help us make the right decisions.

2. Sayyidina Umar RA was given the task of doing the Islamic calander. It starts after Hijrah, when Muslims were doing better than they were before in Makkah.

3. The real migration starts spiritually.

4. Rasulullah SAW kept himself busy with 3 things, which are the foundations of migration, upon reaching Madina:

Strengthen the relationship between the believer and Allah
This was done through the establishment of masjids (mosques). These buildings were the heartbeat of the entire Muslim ummah and served as a general purpose centres. There wasn’t only prayer done in the masjid, but education was also carried out. There was a group called the Ahlul Suffah who did not work and taught at the masjid instead. All important issues such as national security were also discussed in the masjid.

Strengthen the relationship between fellow believers
Brotherhood extends itself beyond words and salaam. While culture seeks to connect you to people who look like you, have the same race, eat the same food as you, Islam connects all believers.

Strenghten the relationship between believers and non-believers
The first constitution (can’t remember when) in the world states that even non-believers can stay and practice their religion. There will be no force in religion.

5. If you have difficulty in making a decision, solat Istikharaah.

6. To embark on your spiritual hijrah:

Look for spirituality in everything that you do/happens to you.

Strenghten the relationship with one another. Get involved in Islamic activities. Be around people who lead a clean life.

Be involved in whatever that benefits the community/society/country. Do something positive with Islam.

7. During the first 13 years, the verses from the Quran focused on Tauheed (Islamic monotheism) and building a relationship with The Creator. The last 10 years, Allah revealed to Rasulullah SAW the solat (prayer), fasting and everything else that hadn’t been revealed before.

8. Jihad is not holy war. Jihad comes from the word jahadah which means, to struggle. There are a few levels of Jihad:

A struggle with yourself to avoid the bad and choose to do good.

Struggling with environmental elements. For eg, drug dealers in the community, gangsterism and etc.

When country’s national security is breached.

9. The Messenger SAW said,

There will come a time when the dust of riba (interest, usury) will touch everyone.

10. Surrogate mums are not allowed as she isn’t married to the man.

11. Friends must have taqwa.

In The Name Of Allah, The Most Compassionate And The Most Merciful.

We, the ummah of Rasulullah SAW are approaching a new year, one of the many years that were determined by his migration. We are also anticipating the arrival of the month of Allah, al-Muharram, in which fasting is more beloved to Allah than any other days other than Ramadhan. Among these days are the 9th and the 10th of the month, in remembrance of the deliverance of Sayyidina Musa AS. With the arrival of this month, we are all reminded of the flight of the chosen Messenger, Sayyidina Muhammad SAW from Mekkah to Madina, as well as all of the guidance, signs, lessons, admonitions and exhortation that it contained.

Rasulullah SAW said:

“The emigrant is one who flees from what Allah has prohibited.

Thus, every adherent of the faith is obliged to approach the up and coming year of 1431H with a sincere resolve and absolute determination to abstain from that of which Allah and His Rasul has forbidden.

Heed the word of Allah SWT:

Do not occupy yourself with what you have no knowledge of for (man’s) eyes, ears and heart, each of these shall be questioned about this. – Al-Israa : 36

1. It is the day on which the religion was perfected and Allah’s favour was completed.

In Al-Saheehayn it was reported from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) that a Jewish man said to him, “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, there is an aayah in your Book which you recite; if it had come to us Jews, we would have taken that day as an ‘Eid (festival).” ‘Umar said, “Which aayah?” He said: “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” [al-Maa’idah 5:3 – interpretation of the meaning]. ‘Umar said, “We know on which day and in which place that was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It was when he was standing in ‘Arafaah on a Friday.”

2. It is a day of Eid for the people who are in that place.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Yawm ‘Arafaah (the day of ‘Arafaah), Yawm al-Nahr (the Day of Sacrifice) and Ayyaam al-Tashreeq (the 3 days following Yawm al-Nahr) are Eid (festival) for us, the people of Islam. These are days of eating and drinking.” This was narrated by the authors of al-Sunan. It was reported that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab said: “It – i.e., the aayah ‘This day I have perfected…’ was revealed on a Friday, the Day of ‘Arafaah, both of which – praise be to Allaah – are Eids for us.”

3. It is a day by which Allah swore and oath.

The Almighty cannot swear by anything except that which is mighty. Yawm ‘Arafaah is the “witnessed day” mentioned in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning):

“By the witnessing day [Friday] and by the witnessed day [the Day of ‘Arafaah].” [al-Burooj 85:3].

It was reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the Day of ‘Arafaah, and the witnessing day is Friday.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.

It is the “odd” [i.e., odd-numbered, Witr] by which Allaah swore in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning):

“And by the even and the odd” [al-Fajr 89:3]. Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “The even is the Day of al-Adhaa [i.e., 10th Dhoo’l-Hijjah] and the odd is the Day of ‘Arafaah [i.e., 9th Dhoo’l-Hijjah] This is also the view of ‘Ikrimah and al-Dahhaak.

4. Fasting on this day is an expiation for 2 years.

It was reported from Abu Qutaadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked about fasting on the Day of ‘Arafaah. He said, “It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.” Narrated by Muslim.

This (fasting) is mustahabb for those who are not on Hajj. In the case of the one who is on Hajj, it is not Sunnah for him to fast on the Day of ‘Arafaah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not fast on this day in ‘Arafaah. It was narrated that he forbade fasting on the Day of ‘Arafaah in ‘Arafaah.

5. It is the day on which ALlah took the covenant from the progeny of Adam.

It was reported that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah took the covenant from the loins of Adam in Na’maan, i.e., ‘Arafaah. He brought forth from his loins all his offspring and spread them before Him, then He addressed them, and said: ‘Am I not your Lord? They said, ‘Yes, we testify,’ let you should say on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Verily, we have been unaware of this.’ Or lest you should say: ‘It was only our fathers aforetime who took others as partners in worship along with Allaah, and we were (merely their) descendents after them; will You then destroy us because of the deeds of men who practised Al-Baatil (i.e., ploytheism and committing crimes and sins, invoking and worshipping others besides Allaah)?’ [al-A’raaf 7:172-173 – interpretation of the meaning].” Narrated by Ahmad and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani. And there is no greater day than this and no greater covenant than this.

6. Is is the day of forgiveness of sins, freedom from the fire and pride in the people who are there.

In Saheeh Muslim it was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no day on which Allaah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of ‘Arafaah. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels, saying, ‘What do these people want?’”

It was reported from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah expresses His pride to His angels at the time of ‘Ishaa’ on the Day of ‘Arafaah, about the people of ‘Arafaah. He says, ‘Look at My slaves who have come unkempt and dusty.’” Narrated by Ahmad and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.

And Allaah knows best.

In The Name Of Allah, The Most Compassionate And The Most Merciful.

It’s been a few months since I watched MTV, but when I did recently, there was this show “16 And Pregnant”. Like seriously, have we stooped down to such degrading levels? It’s really sad that people would even glorify kids getting knocked down and pregnant.

The signs and portents of the Day of Resurrection are the things that will happen before the Resurrection takes place and will indicate that it is close at hand. They have been divided into lesser and greater signs. The lesser signs, for the most part, will occur a long time before the Resurrection begins.

Some of them have happened and ended – although they may be repeated – and some of them have appeared and are ongoing, and some have not yet happened, but they will happen as the truthful one (the Prophet) (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has told us:

The Major Signs are serious matters, the appearance of which will indicate that the Day of Resurrection is at hand and that there is only a short time until that great Day comes.

The lesser signs of the Hour include the following:

1. The sending of the Prophet SAW.

2. The death of the Prophet SAW.

3. The conquest of Jerusalem.

4. The plague of Amwaas (Emmaus), which is a city in Palestine.

5. Widespread wealth and lack of need for charity.

6. The appearance of fitan (tribulations). Among the tribulations that occurred in the early years of Islam were: the killing of ‘Uthmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him), the battle of the camel and the battle of Siffeen, the emergence of the Khawaarij, the battle of al-Harrah, and the opinion that the Qur’aan is a creation.

7. The emergence of claimants to Prophethood, such as the liar Musaylimah and al-Aswad al-‘Anasi.

8. The appearance of fire in the Hijaaz, which appeared in the middle of the 7th century AH, in 654 AH. This was a great fire, which the scholars who were alive at the time of its appearance and those who came after them described in great detail. Al-Nawawi said: There appeared in our time a fire in Madeenah, in the year six hundred and fifty-four. It was a very great fire on the eastern side of Madeenah, beyond the Harrah, and knowledge of it was widespread throughout Syria and all lands. Those of the people of Madeenah who were present told me about it.

9. Loss of trust. One of the manifestations of loss of trust is people’s affairs being entrusted to those who are not qualified or able for that.

10. The taking away of knowledge and the prevalence of ignorance; the taking away of knowledge will occur with the disappearance of the scholars, as it says in al-Saheehayn.

11. The spread of zina (adultery, fornication)

12. The spread of riba (usury, interest)

13. The prevalence of musical instruments.

14. Widespread drinking of alcohol.

15. Shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings.

16. A slave woman giving birth to her mistress, as is stated in al-Saheehayn. There are several views among the scholars as to what this means. The view favoured by Ibn Hajar is that there will be widespread disobedience among children, so that a child will treat his mother as a master treats his slave woman, with negligence and insults.

17. Widespread killing.

18. Widespread earthquakes.

19. Appearance of landslides, transformations and stones from heaven.

20. Appearance of women who are clothed yet naked.

21. Believer’s dreams coming true.

22. Widespread giving of false testimony and concealment of true testimony.

23. Large numbers of women.

24. The land of the Arabs becoming once again meadows and rivers.

25. The Euphrates will uncover a mountain of gold.

26. Wild animals and inanimate objects will speak to people.

27. The “Romans” will increase in number and fight the Muslims.

28. The conquest of Constantinople.

In The Name Of Allah, The Most Compassionate And The Most Merciful.

Narrated Abdullah bin Masud: I asked Allah’s Apostle, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is the best deed?” He replied, “To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times.” I asked, “What is next in goodness?” He replied, “To be good and dutiful to your parents.” I further asked, what is next in goodness?” He replied, “To participate in Jihad in Allah’s Cause.” I did not ask Allah’s Apostle anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more.

I complained to a friend of mine that it gets very boring or “basi” to see the faces I see everyday when I wake up in the morning. And she said, these are the same faces which we will miss when they are not around. And suddenly, the thought of them, esp my mum, not around was enough to make me feel guilty. How could I complain when she was the one who carried me and climb the stairs when I was sick, when she cooked brilliant food, when she bought stuff for me. Yes, her life has been in turmoil but I bet her iman is stronger than carbon fibre and titanium combined together.

Anyway, here’s a bit about Uwais Bin Qarny. Rasulullah SAW told the sahabah to ask Uwais for supplication. When the sahabah went up to him, he seem like any other average, ordinary man. But they were asked to seek Uwais’ dua as he has been very good to his parents. Now, if the Messenger SAW told them do so, it means that the dua from someone who has been good to his parents, is better than anyone else’s dua.

You’ve been heavily tested and that means He loves and hasn’t forgotten about you. We are all Allah’s fighters and we fight in what we believe is right and carry out our duties. Sometimes we get wounded by heavy enemy fire, but we still fight. Fight… all the way to Jannah Firdaus, where we can see Allah and his Beloved SAW with our own eyes, and in a place where there isn’t a bit of depression, anxiety and all that. May Allah keep this family of mine strong and bonded together in dunya but also in our quest to Paradise Firdaus. Ameen.

Question: I often encounter rude behavior from sisters when I attend the mosque and other events. This burdens my spirit and I’ve concluded that Islam is the relationship between you and God and the ummah part is just extra if you can deal with it. In other words I don’t enjoy the company of many sisters and just rather be at home. Tonight from prayer I was walking towards my door and I thought “maybe I shouldn’t be Muslim anymore” and as soon as I thought it, I fell down a flight of steps, hurt my right hand and nearly broke the fingers on my left. If the shayateen are bounded during Ramadan where is all this from?

Answer: I pray that you are doing well inshaAllah and that Allah will ease the pain in your heart and safeguard and increase your faith.

The scholars of Ihsan (spiritual excellence) note that dealing with people is one of the greatest trials that a person can face. It tests one’s whole being — one’s physical, emotional and mental reactions. Dealing with the ill-treatment of a fellow Muslim and being forgiving is a great mujahada (spiritual struggle) whose reward is commensurate with the difficulty one finds in doing it.

You are right in that one should not have to expose oneself to verbal or emotional abuse. Try to put yourself in situations where you can avoid this. If you know certain people cause you harm, stay away from them. But seek out others who are kind and upright. Each community has members that are difficult to interact with, but each community also has members that uphold the excellence of Islamic character. Look for the good and you will find it.

When you see a person’s bad traits, make a sincere supplication for them, turn away from noticing their wrong actions, and remember that everyone has areas in which they need to improve. However wrong the actions of a Muslim may be, they still have an immense rank with Allah, because He has chosen for them faith (iman), which is the greatest of all deeds. The best way to not have rancour in one’s heart for a person is to replace every negative thought about them with a heartfelt prayer for the person.

The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) told us that the weightiest deed on our scale on the Day of Judgement will be good character (husn al-khuluq). Try to embody this yourself and you will inshaAllah be a source of guidance and an example for others. During these special days and nights of Ramadan, make sincere supplication to Allah to help you find some good company.

In the meantime, do not completely discontinue your socialization and become isolated. There is blessing in the group, for the wolf comes after the lone sheep. I have seen Muslims who have distanced themselves because they were disillusioned by their community, and their connection with the religion became weaker and weaker. There is protection with being with the group, as the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “Allah’s hand is with the group.”

Lastly, Allah tells us, “If you are thankful, I will certainly increase you (Surah Ibrahim, 7).” Gratitude for something is the secret for being increased in it. Thank Allah that you have a masjid, a house of Allah, to attend and that you have other Muslims that you can see and spend time with and He will send you blessings and increase in your company and gatherings. This goes hand in hand with keeping a positive attitude. If one enters a gathering with a warm smile, looking for the good, they will find benefit inshaAllah.

May Allah grant you increase in all things good and grant you righteous company.

Wassalam,
Sulma

Kenapa? Kerana Allah kata, kejayaan hanya utk org yg beriman yang menjaga solat. Org yang menjaga solat , org tu dah sure habis confirm 100% berjaya.
